Terrain Flowers is a flower shop and floral design studio that has served Toronto and the GTA with creatively designed floral arrangements for everyday occasions to special events for over 15 years. Established in 2003 at Yonge and Eglinton, the team at Terrain Flowers has operated out of the current location on Dufferin Street since 2012.

Terrain Flowers specializes in vase arrangements and hand-tied bouquets for everyday enjoyment and gift-giving. The day-to-day business is highlighted with holiday creations from Valentine’s Day, to Passover and Mothers Day, then followed by Rosh Hashanah and Christmas which round out the year. Weddings and events keep the studio abuzz year-round, especially in spring and fall. The studio offers delivery across the GTA with orders placed online, by phone, and in person.

Darrin Butler is the owner of Terrain Flowers. Around the time of his 10th anniversary in a corporate sales and marketing role, he moved into the floral industry. Darrin was encouraged and supported by his family and friends who were positive a more creative career path would be his calling.

His natural eye for design and love of nature made the progression into becoming a florist a natural fit and the confidence of his corporate background gave him the experience to manage and run his own flower shop.

As with most florists, Darrin’s favourite part of the job is working with flowers – roses being his favourite – and sourcing beautiful blooms both locally and from abroad is a key factor in the success of his business.

Although flower supply has been impacted by the pandemic, his team navigates the new challenges with strategic buying practices which ensure they continue to create timeless beautiful designs for these modern times.

In 2019, and with thanks to The Marketo District BIA, Terrain Flowers decided to take part in the Commercial Industrial Façade and Property Improvement grant program. This program is a BIA financial incentive that provides funding to commercial and industrial property owners to redesign, renovate, or restore their building façade. In order to be approved for the grant, the applicant must be the owner of the property or have the permission of the property owner, and the building must be located in a BIA area.

Gradual cosmetic improvements were made to the façade in recent years, however, getting approved for the grant allowed for the dramatic renovation of the entire façade.

It was an exciting experience for Darrin, resulting in a stronger street presence which showcases the shop’s product offering. He encourages other business owners within the BIA to apply for the grant.

“The city is there to help each step of the way and provides guidance throughout the grant process, so it is definitely worthwhile,” said Darrin. “People in the neighbourhood have noticed and clients new and old continue to comment on our storefront.”
